Strides Toward Creating a ‘Smellaverse’ in This Week of the Metaverse
Chinese researchers have developed a wearable device capable of producing smells for people in virtual reality (VR) via heated scented wax. The device attaches to a person’s upper lip and generates smells such as pineapple, rosemary, mint, watermelon, vanilla, coffee, ginger, strawberry, and lavender. It is not clear what practical uses the technology might have or whether it will be commercially available. The researchers’ paper was published in the journal Nature Communications. Meanwhile, the NFT market has continued to grow, despite a slowdown in NFT sales last year and the collapse of FTX, according to data from DappRadar. The number of daily unique active wallets to interact on-chain with dapps has increased by 50% since 2021, averaging 2.37 million daily unique active wallets this year. NFT marketplaces and dapps have grown by 18% over the past 12 months. Elon Musk tweeted a meme using the NFT project Milady and propelled it higher by up to 60%, making it controversial, while the memecoin Turbo, created by Rhett Mankind almost entirely with AI chatbot GPT-4, has entered the top 300 cryptocurrencies on CoinGecko before retreating. Finally, Binance announced that it would support Ordinals, or Bitcoin NFTs, directly from users’ Binance accounts, following increased transaction volumes driven by the new technology.
