Crypto Community Excited by Tesla Website’s Source Code Including Bitcoin
There was excitement in the cryptocurrency community when a rumor started that the source code of Dogecoin and Bitcoin was found on Tesla’s official website. Many believed that this could indicate that Tesla might resume accepting Bitcoin as a form of payment, especially after CEO Elon Musk’s previous tweets about Bitcoin and Dogecoin. Twitter users speculated that Musk might have a surprise for the crypto community. However, Chinese crypto reporter Collin Wu debunked the rumor, explaining that the presence of Bitcoin and Dogecoin in the source code was not a recent addition but had been there since January 2023 when Tesla initially added them to its website. The source code simply retained the references even after Tesla paused accepting Bitcoin as payment.
When Tesla invested $1.5 billion in Bitcoin in 2021, it was seen as a sign of growing mainstream acceptance of the cryptocurrency. However, Musk later announced that Tesla would no longer accept Bitcoin due to its high carbon emissions. He stated that while cryptocurrency had a promising future, it should not come at a great cost to the environment and that Tesla would use Bitcoin for transactions once mining transitions to more sustainable energy.
Meanwhile, the price of Bitcoin dipped below $30,000 this week, trading at $29,835.69. It experienced a 0.70% loss and had a 24-hour trading volume of $14,774,471,631.
Overall, the rumor about Tesla’s source code containing Bitcoin and Dogecoin references turned out to be false, with the references being present since January. The speculation of Tesla’s potential reacceptance of Bitcoin as payment was debunked.
